Description
Your 1st and 2nd graders will love these Christmas themed place value and number sense tasks, and YOU will love the differentiation and simplicity of prep involved in this activity!
What is included:
⇒ 5 Christmas themed ‘decks’ of cards 0-9 with counting pictures
⇒ 2 coordinating place value mats for each deck (tens/ones and hundreds/tens/ones)
⇒ Task ‘book’ with six place value and number tasks
Tasks in the task book:
⇒ Comparing numbers
⇒ Ordering numbers
⇒ 10 More, 10 Less
⇒ 3-Addend addition
⇒ Subtraction
⇒ Missing Addends
*Differentiate this task book by giving more advanced students the 3-digit place value mat instead of the 2-digit.*
Prep:
★ Print out ‘decks’ of counting cards. Recommended: Print on cardstock and laminate for durability. Print 2 or 3 sets of 0-9 for each ‘deck.’
★ Print out place value mat(s) for each deck. Determine if you want to use tens/ones or hundreds/tens/ones based on student needs. Recommended: Print half of the deck mats tens/ones and the other half hundreds/tens/ones so you can assign certain students to certain decks.
★ Laminate place value mats so that students can use dry erase markers to write digits in top row as they make numbers.
★ Copy the task book. Print settings: Double sided, fit to page and flip on short edge (or short edge binding).
Your students will need:
★ Deck of number cards and coordinating place value mat that matches their needs
★Pencil
★ Optional: Counters, base ten blocks, unifix cubes, hundreds chart etc. to support counting; Crayons to color the front of their task book
To complete:
When instructions tell students to “make a number,” they will draw cards from their counting cards deck and place them in the bottom row of boxes on their place value mat. They will count the number of items shown on their card to figure out the digits in their number.
When instructions tell students to “draw a card,” they will randomly pick a card from their deck and count the number of items shown on their card.
Teaching recommendations:
Option 1: Independent work during guided math rotations. Have decks and mats stored where students can access on their own.
Option 2: Homework. Send home a deck and task book at the beginning of the week to be turned in on Friday.
Option 3: Rotations. Have a deck and mat set up at 6 different ‘stations.’ Students will complete one task at each ‘station’ with a group or a partner.
Option 4: Morning work/Bell ringer work. Students can grab a deck and place value mat as they finish unpacking in the morning. They can complete the tasks all week and turn in their task book when finished.
